Preparing & INstalling

What tools do I need?
The essentials that you will need for Wallpaper:

• Wallpaper- check you have enough of it. Ensure you have measured correctly before ordering.
• Paste. Use a ready mixed wallpaper paste that comes in a resealable tub to save you time and avoid waste if you need to wallpaper in stages. Your local hardware store will recommend one for you.
• Wallpaper application brush. Ensure it fits into the paste tub.
• A plumb line measuring tool. You can buy these from your local hardware store. However, if it is one simple feature wall you are doing, you can get a plumb line measuring app on your app store for free.
• A sharp wallpaper trimming knife or snap blade and a pair of scissors. Using the knife is easier, but scissors are better for bits of wallpaper that won’t cut. You’ll also need the scissors to cut the paper off the roll.
• Tape measure and a pencil.
• A couple of clean cloth’s for smoothing down the wallpaper onto the wall.

How do I deal with windows and doors when wallpapering?

Ceilings radiators etc

The corner can also be papered directly with Go/Pro non-woven material. Doors: Doors must always be papered from one side only. At the same time, it is important to note that the non-woven length should not overlap the door frame by more than approx. 3 cm. The overlapping excess can be cut off cleanly with a utility knife and a plastic spatula.

Windows

As a rule, begin with the first length at one side of the window. Leave enough excess non-woven wall covering at the window in order to cover the window reveals adequately. At the edge of the upper window reveal and at the window sill, use a utility knife to cleanly cut off the excess wall covering. This excess section can now be used to line the window reveal. The non-woven excess piece between the point where the wall and ceiling meet and the window reveal is cleanly cut off. Any excess wall covering in the area of the window reveal is to be neatly trimmed off.

Radiators

Wallpapering “around” radiators. Non-woven wall covering is not applied behind radiators!

Recesses

Do the wallpapering across the recesses of the ceiling lights. When dry cut out the non-woven material covering the socket with the utility knife. After unscrewing the light switch and socket covers, you can paper over the exposed fittings. Before starting switch off the electric supply to the room concerned. After the wallpaper has been applied, immediately cut a cross-shaped incision into the non-woven wall covering and clean the switch mechanism to remove any adhesive. Once the non-woven wall covering is dry, use the utility knife to trim to the proper switch dimensions.

Ceilings

Wallpapering is usually done “away from the light”, that is, starting with the ceiling working from the window towards the centre of the room. Mark two points with the chalk line, lining-up with an approximate distance of 500mm to the parallel wall. This ensures that the consecutive non-woven lengths will be straight, even if the walls are not square to the ceiling. Ideally two people are needed. Roll out the first strip, which had been cut to size, to the outside, i.e. away from you. Apply the non-woven fabric to the paste bed leaving a slight overlap at the wall. The non-woven lengths are rolled out wrinkle-free and applied edge to edge using the foam rubber roller. Press the excess length with a plastic spatula into the angle where wall and ceiling meet and trim cleanly using the utility knife

How do I deal with wall sockets & switches when wallpapering?

As a general rule, we recommend that you always turn off the electricity when working on walls with sockets or light switches. Splashes of wallpaper paste or dampness entering the electric circuit can be extremely dangerous.

Cover the socket or switch The opening of sockets can quite easily be felt through the wallpaper, and light switches protrude slightly, which means they can be seen underneath the wallpaper. Now brush or roll towards the socket/switch. This will make the contours even more visible.

Use a cutter knife to cut the wallpaper crosswise in the central part of the socket opening or light switch, just like our Wallpaper Girl does. Make sure that there is sufficient wallpaper overlap around the sockets or switches so that the frame will cover the wallpaper later on. In other words, do not cut too far into the area around the edges. Unfold the cross in the wallpaper and remove traces of wallpaper paste from the socket or switch and the surrounding areas (as far as you can reach them).

After the usual drying time, use a cutter knife to carefully cut off the superfluous paper (don’t forget to leave an overlap of about 2 – 4 mm!). Now press the wallpaper down again along the edges.

To make sure that the remaining traces of wallpaper paste (which cannot be detected with the naked eye) have dried completely, please wait for at least 30 minutes before you reconnect the electricity.
